WHICH IS BETTER, TIRZEPATIDE OR SEMAGLUTIDE?

At CW Weight Loss this question is asked often. While there is no perfect answer, it pays to research the difference between the two medications and how they work.

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a a GIP adn GLP-1 receptor agonist. Broken down to layman’s terms, it uses two mechanisms for weight loss. The medication imitates two hormones in the body that are responsible for regulating hunger and regulating blood glucose levels. Tirzepatide slows the rate of food passing through the intestines, which in turn prolongs the time food is spent in the stomach. This results in feeling full and reducing hunger and cravings. It also lowers blood sugar levels by decreasing the amount of sugar the liver makes, which in turn increases insulin production. Tirzepatide is prescribed under the name brand Monjaro for adults with type 2 diabetes and weight loss issues. Tirzepatide is a once weekly subcutaneous injection.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 agonist. It uses one mechanism for weight loss by imatating the GLP-1 hormone which prolongs stomach emptying. This helps regulate hunger and decreases cravings. Semaglutide is prescribed under the name brand Ozempic to people with type 2 diabetes who have cardiovasular disease. Ozempic helps reduce the risk of cardiac events like heart attacks or stroke. Semaglutide is also a once weekly subcutaneous injection.

So which one works better for weight loss?

Research suggest that tirzepatide has a slightly more signifcant reduction in body weight than semaglutide. However, it’s important to note that every person reacts to medication differently. What works for one person may not be as effective in another person.

Tirzepatide uses two target receptors for weight loss and semaglutide uses one. They have slightly different targets in the brain, both in which results in less hunger. Like all medications, both semaglutide and tirzepatide can come with side effects. Both may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion. Some other severe (but rare) side effects of both medications include pancreatitis, kidney failure, vision changes, and hypoglycemia. It is very important to disclose your complete medical history to your provider before using either of these medications and to use the medications exactly as prescribed. It is also important to note that both medications should be combined with diet and lifestyle changes to experience sustainable and long lasting weight loss.
